Kees Hummelen: a creative, inspirational and unorthodox scientist from Groningen

To mark the occasion of official retirement Prof. J. C. (Kees) Hummelen, Journal Materials Chemistry C has dedicated a special issue to honour his achievements in field materials chemistry. This personal essay, written by study mate, close colleague and long-standing friend, highlights pioneering contributions that Kees Hummelen made various fields organic chemistry during 45 year long career. His research began with asymmetric synthesis chemiluminescence culminated most notable results fullerene development photovoltaic technology. More recently, he also been active for molecular field-effect transistors, biosensors single molecule electronics based on internal π logic. He was teacher deeply involved societal challenges. Because my relationship all those years, I have this essay somewhat unorthodox way; way is so characteristic Kees.
